New Zealand is known world wide for the progressive ideas around animal welfare. As part of my job, I have been fortunate enough to be involved in having input into many aspects of the welfare codes of practice, as interpretations of the Animal Welfare Act 1999. Veterinarians, scientists and the public are tasked with not only stewardship of this legislation but also the science that underpins the application of it.
If you have never read the codes of practice, I would encourage you to do so with this link https://www.mpi.govt.nz/protection-and…/…/codes-of-welfare/…
These codes may sound like they are written in a way that speaks to farmers, but the expectations in these codes would apply to anyone owning or responsible for the well-being of any animal.
