DIY First Aid Formulas You Can Make at Home in a Pinch

Discover how to make simple and effective first aid formulas for birds using common ingredients from your local supermarket. These quick solutions are designed to provide hydration, energy, and essential nutrients to support your bird in times of need.

While these formulas can offer a helpful temporary solution, they are not a replacement for professional veterinary care.

Key Ratios for Balance:

Carbohydrates: ~60–70%

Proteins: ~20–25%

Fats: ~10–15%

Ensure hydration through added liquids.

  • 1. Carbohydrates (Energy Source 60 - 70%)

Carbohydrates are the primary energy source for birds and should form the largest portion of the formula.

    • Cooked rice (white or brown, well-cooked and mashed)
    • Baby rice cereal (plain, iron-fortified)

    • Mashed pumpkin or butternut squash (cooked)
    • Oats (rolled oats or quick oats, soaked or cooked)
    • Cooked pasta (plain, no sauces, chopped small)

  • 2. Fats (Energy and Fat-Soluble Vitamin Support 10 - 15%)

Fats are critical for sustained energy and recovery. Birds don’t need a lot, so use sparingly.

    • Protein powder (unsweetened, plant-based like pea protein)
  • 4. Hydration and Electrolytes (Mix 2 parts liquid of choice for every 1 part of food)

Hydration is critical, especially for sick or recovering birds.

    • Clean water (always accessible)

These ingredients provide essential nutrients to boost recovery.

    • Fresh greens (e.g., spinach, parsley, kale, silverbeet, carrots – cooked and blended or finely minced)
    • Vitamin supplements (avian multivitamins, if available)
    • Honey, sugar or dextrose (for quick energy)
    • Nutritional yeast (a small pinch for B vitamins)
    • Fresh herbs (e.g., oregano, thyme – small amounts for antimicrobial properties)
